Grrr, me hearty! It’s time for ye to walk tis plank!
In honor this day, here are some fun facts:
- Invented in 1995 by John Baur (Ol' Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy), of Corvallis, Oregon
- The idao was born because some of them yelled "Aaarrr!" when hit with a racquetball (on June 6, 1995 nontheless)
- Sept 19th was choosen as the offical date because it was Summer's ex-wife's birthday. (not quite sure of the connection there…)
- Dave Berry, syndicated humor columnist, brought the holiday to the Nation in 2002
- Baur and Summers appeared on ABC's Wife Swap, first aired September 18, 2006, as "a family of pirates"
- Actor Robert Newton, who portrayed Long John Silver in the 1950 Disney film Treasure Island and then in the 1954 film Long John Silver, is the patron saint of Talk Like A Pirate Day.
